Machine guns go off, enemies start shout. At some point I got discovered and the music kicks right in, there is a sense of rush which is only complemented by the great soundtrack. I destroy alarm stations by kicking them, peaking around and listening to enemy discussions while admiring the atmosphere and graphics. Controls are still smooth, animations feel satisfying and overall I am already utterly impressed by it. I start to sneak around and get my first few sneaky kills with the knife. The militaristic music starts off great and really giving you the vibe that you're about to sneak around and do some special ops stuff. Obviously, it is outdated by todays standards but it still has a cohesive and visual style that oozes atmosphere. Furthermore, the graphics and entire environment still looks decent. Other games from that time do age and feel entirely clunky or outdated. Honestly, I was absolutely baffled on how entirely great the movement and controls still felt after all these years. Movement is fast and snappy, you can even sprint and peak around corners. Instantly, I notice how absolutely smooth the gameplay still feels. In a neat cutscene he overwhelms the guard and the game starts with you holding a knife in your cell.Īfter checking the controls, I start exploring the dungeons of the castle. Despite this, the game throws you right into Castle Wolfenstein we're BJ is captured and ready for interrogation. It is basically just a way to to get the player up to speed in what situation we're finding ourselves in what the general framework of the game is. The game starts off with relatively boring cutscenes of people having a boring discussion while standing in a boring room. Honestly, RTCW is probably the game that really doubled down on this formula. The franchise is notable for having a somewhat grounded WWII setting which mixes supernatural and occult elements, then blends them together in a shlocky FPS adventure. The game is cheaply available and requires just a minor patch which makes the resolution customizable for modern systems, this didn't take more than 5 minutes and I was already good to go. Truth to be told, the game harbors a lot of nostalgia to me and I do have some really fond gaming memories when I played it as a kid (which I probably shouldn't have at that age).Īnyhow, my goal was to stay objective and decided to give the old game a spin with the intend to see if it still holds up after more than 2 entire decades. Some hours passed and suddenly I just felt the urge to replay Return to Castle Wolfenstein which was released in 2001. Although I played this game back in the day when it was released on console, I felt like replaying it to see if it still holds up. Due to the recent Bethesda Steam sale, I went on and purchased Wolfenstein: The New Order.
